Builders in England will soon be required to fit all new homes with solar panels, following the implementation of new legislation first proposed by Lib Dem MP Max Wilkinson.

Max’s ‘Sunshine Bill’ called to make the installation of solar panels a new build requirement. However, it notably also allowed for heat pumps to be installed as a substitute for houses where solar panels wouldn’t be suitable, whilst the Government simply grants exemptions for these builds.

The Sunshine Bill received considerable support from MPs, including local MP, Alex Brewer, who spoke in the bill’s favour as it was debated in the House of Commons. In her speech, Alex highlighted that the bill promotes renewable energy in a way that also reduces the pressure on important green spaces.

Commenting, Alex said: “Local people are passionate about protecting our environment, and know that to do this we need to produce more renewable energy, but we are also protective of our farming land, which is so essential for our food security.

“The measures in the Sunshine Bill will see all new homes installed with solar panels, bringing down energy costs, lowering our emissions and boosting economic growth, all while protecting our vital and vibrant countryside.”

The changes are also expected to save new households an average of £500 per year on their energy bills.
