A nomination from local MP, Alex Brewer, has seen Fleet recognised by a national competition as a leading example of how UK towns can be more sustainable.

The Let’s Celebrate Towns Awards spotlight how towns across the UK are overcoming challenges and delivering for their communities. They focus on 6 key areas that are important to local businesses and help to support thriving local economies.

Fleet was shortlisted in the 'Powering Change' category, which focuses on specific sustainability challenges, like renewable energy usage. This came after local Lib Dem MP, Alex Brewer, worked with local community leaders to put together a comprehensive bid highlighting the town’s achievements.

In recent years, Lib Dem-led Hart District Council has launched a number of initiatives aimed at promoting Fleet's sustainability. Examples of these efforts include solar panels and heat pumps in the Council's buildings, new electric car charging points in car parks and residents' homes, and investment in warm homes.

Commenting on the town's achievements, Alex Brewer MP said:

"These projects put residents at the heart of our community, helping with insulation and heating bills. They are a great example of how we can tackle climate change in a positive and cost-effective way.

"Local Councillors' amazing work deserved to be recognised, and I was proud to celebrate our community on a national stage."
